The Character Education Committee

The committee is hosting an Earth Day Celebration at PV Town Park on May 2nd at 4pm. We will be planting flowers and picking up trash in order to beautify a section of the park. All students and families are welcome! Pizza and refreshments are provided for all who attend.

Our Current Unit:

This month's unit is Responsibility. Our book for this unit is The Garden on Green Street, by Meish Goldish. The book tells the story about a neighborhood that comes together to create a community garden on an empty lot. Neighbors unite again to save their garden when a building company wants to build a parking lot. This book shows how the people in the neighborhood can work together to achieve a common goal. Our hope is that in reading and discussing this text in their class, students will recognize and celebrate just how responsible they are, and be inspired to take more responsibility for themselves and their community.

About Us:

The Character Education/Diversity Committee is a team made up of teachers, staff, and administrators who share the goal of uniting our school community through the PVES Great Expectations: Be Kind, Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible. We meet bi-monthly and over the summer to plan assemblies and lesson plans, discuss books that support the Great Expectations, and devise ways to make our school community more united, safe, kind, respectful, and responsible. Our mission is to provide students with a more culturally diverse curriculum and goals for improving our school environment and the community at large.

Themed Units:

Throughout the school year, the Character Education Committee plans and implements various units that will reinforce our school's great expectations. For each unit, teachers are provided with a children's book that illustrates the message of this unit. Teachers are also given a book guide that provides a summary of the text and several activities to do with students. Monthly calendars, which list daily reminders of how to be safe, kind, respectful and responsible, are shared with students. Finally, bulletin boards are created by the committee to display the work of students in their efforts to follow the great expectations. The thematic units are as followed:

October/November - Be Safe
December/January - Be Kind
February/March - Be Respectful
April/May - Be Responsible
