A Message From The Principal

May 23, 2016

Dear PVHS Parents and Guardians,

We are having a busy spring at the high school with many important events. As you know, Mr. Odell has decided to return to the classroom next year. We are currently in the process of searching for a new assistant principal to begin over the summer. We are screening over thirty experienced candidates for the position and will bring the strongest candidates forward the first week of June for a committee interview and an open forum. The PTSA is providing us with parent representatives for the committee and the open forum will be open to the entire PVHS community. The final date of the forum has not been set, but we will notify the public when the time is formalized.

This year, we have instituted a new tradition, an Academic Awards Ceremony for grades 9, 10 and 11. Students in each grade will be presented with awards in all academic areas, as well as in the area of citizenship. Parents have been invited to attend and we are looking forward to recognizing our hard working students!

We are also very excited about our new Senior Week activities where seniors will end classes on June 3 and participate in special events from June 6-June 10. Please check out the list of events on the Senior Calendar posted on the website. We also can’t wait for our Graduation Rehearsal on Wednesday, June 22 when we travel to Putnam Valley Elementary School to bid farewell and appreciation to the elementary school faculty and staff. We look forward to seeing many of you at Spring Fest, Friday, June 3 at our legendary Powder Puff game for juniors and seniors.

We want to thank all the parents, students, and teachers, who attended the Chemistry Forum on Tuesday, April 19, 2016. We appreciate the questions, the comments and the many valuable statements made in regards to opening honors access for all students in Chemistry for the 2016-2017 school year. After listening to everyone, we are incorporating many of the suggestions made at the forum to improve our science program for next year.

We will continue with our plan to offer an Honors Option for all students in Regents Chemistry and heterogeneously group students. Students, who choose the Honors Option and are successful, will receive the Honors designation on their transcript as well as the Honors weight of 1.05. This will give all students the opportunity to be exposed to more challenging material without a negative impact on their grade for the course.

We believe our teachers are the key to success in our new initiative. Therefore, all of our Chemistry teachers will be working with Dr. Helen Pashley, a well-respected science consultant, during the summer and throughout next year on developing curriculum, assessments, and common pacing for the new course. This work is in direct alignment with upcoming New York State changes to standards in science, where there will be a much greater emphasis on science application and defending arguments using scientific methods.

Additionally, we have reduced Chemistry class sizes and also added a Chemistry support class 10th period, specifically for Chemistry students who need additional help in this subject. Our AP Chemistry will have two sections instead of one, and all requirements to enter the class have been removed. General Chemistry will still be offered, but as a half year elective. This will give those students who struggle in math, a modified Chemistry curriculum.

With Dr. Pashley's help in curriculum and assessments, we believe that all of our students will be better prepared for college level work and have a greater range of career opportunities available to them. We also feel that if students have the opportunity to engage with rigorous material, they will be positively influenced and feel more confident about their educational and career options for the future.

As we close out the year, this is a reminder that laptops will be collected on the following dates:

12th grade: June 1-June 7 (Laptop, charger and case!)
11th grade: June 14 thru last exam (Laptop Only)
10th grade: June 14 thru last exam (Laptop Only)
9th grade: June 14 thru last exam (Laptop Only)

Please make sure to note that June 1 is a special schedule so that we can administer the Algebra II Common Core Regents exam. Please check out our website for the schedule on that day.

Thank you for your support and we wish everyone a positive and successful end to the school year.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

This year the Algebra II Common Core Exam will be given by the state on Wednesday, June 1st 2016. This test is a requirement for any students taking the Algebra II Regents course with Mr. Baker or Mr. Natalie.

In order to accommodate the 10th and 11th graders who need to take the Algebra II Common Core Exam, we will have a special schedule for Wednesday, June 1st 2016.

On Wednesday, June 1st, 2016 any 10th and 11th graders who will be taking the Algebra II Common Core Exam should report to school at the regular time. The test will take approximately 3 hours to administer from 7:30am-10:30am.

Students who are not enrolled in the Algebra II Regents course will be on a delayed schedule for June 1st and will follow the delayed bus run schedule that was used for the first day of school. The bus schedule will be posted on the website. After the exam, all students will attend periods 4-8. Please see attached schedule.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate the main office at the high school at 526-7847.
