High School Studio Art Project In Puppetry -
June 02, 2010
The Studio Art classes at Putnam Valley High School are currently completing a unit on puppetry. This unit is extensive and involves many disciplines. The students will be working with a puppet artist, Cynthia Favia, thanks to “Arts in Education” funding. Additionally, students will take a trip to see a puppet exhibition at the Katonah Museum of Art, entitled “The Art of Contemporary Puppet Theater” which will be open until June 13, 2010. Students will be creating stories based on ecology, writing a script, building a puppet, videotaping their story and editing it into a one to two minute movie. Many of the Putnam Valley High School teachers are helping with this project to make it the most enriching experience possible for the students; they include: Jen Armbruster, Lisa Furlong, Keith Fiore, Angela Capodanno, Jerry Zupan, Jason Horr, Brian Kuczma, Gerry Micera and Ryan Odell. In keeping with the ecology theme, the students will be making the puppets from mostly recycled materials.
The culmination of this six to seven week unit is an exhibition of the puppets with an opening reception in the new art gallery at Putnam Valley High School (which was made possible by the Putnam Valley Education Foundation) and a viewing of the student films on Monday June 14, 2010. The reception will begin at 6:30pm and the movies will be shown from approximately 7:00-8:30pm. The PVHS Art Department invites all members of the community to join them on June 14.
