In mid-March, a new group of members joined the Putnam Valley High School chapter of the Mu Alpha Theta (MAT) math honor society at its annual Induction Ceremony.
Mrs. Jerri Cohen, Co-Advisor, opened the evening with welcoming words and PVHS senior Victoriea Hamilton, Chapter President, then conducted the ceremony with the assistance of VP Kristen Macher, Treasurer Caitlin White, and Secretary Megan Mahoney. The highlight of the ceremony was the candle lighting, followed by presentations on Scholarship—by Quinn Gilman-Forlini, Leadership—by Sarah Liscia, Service—by Maria Rao, and Character—byTess Torregrosa. The Signing of Membership Book followed the Presentation of Pins, Certificates, and Membership Cards.
As always, the evening concluded with a festive reception for the new inductees. Newly inducted members pictured are Logan Bagarozy, Trevor Mahnert, Christine Alexander, Cassandra Girvalo, Serena Boshak, Tess Torregrosa, Maria Rao, Quinn Gilman-Forlini, Sarah Liscia, and Eric Pait. Doris Baclija was unable to attend.
In addition to their regular tutoring of their peers in Mathematics, Mu Alpha Theta members provide leadership and assistance at the Math Nights held at the Elementary and Middle Schools. During the past year, Mu Alpha Theta members helped to collect pajamas for the Pajama Program of Westchester and the Putnam Community Action Program. The group will begin collecting pajamas for the Pajama Program (spring and summer styles for children up to the age of twelve) again soon. Donations of pajamas and checks to the “Pajama Program” will be accepted.
Mu Alpha Theta’s Co-Advisors are PVHS math teachers Mrs. Jerri Cohen and Mrs. Melissa Rossano.
