Pride in Putnam Valley recognizes Cody Sharp for the
accomplishment of winning his 100th career match in
wrestling - a milstone in his career.
Cody Sharp was selectively
classified for varsity wrestling as a 7th grader because
of his unique physical abilities. He also had to have
the requisite emotional maturity to handle the challenge
of competing at the varsity level and it was clear to
me that he was more than ready and able to handle the
rigors and commitment associated the kind of intense
daily training we do in the sport of wrestling. He met
the challenge well!
He was instantly competitive and typically lost only
tough well-fought battles against athletes that spend
the entire year wrestling and training for wrestling.
This is a huge testament to Cody's natural abilities
because he had other athletic interests such as football
and lacrosse. It is not easy and certainly rare to find
someone with that kind of natural ability to even compete
with the best wrestlers that "do it all year!"
Over the years he garnered the highest levels of respect
from other section I coaches and competitors, where
the typical word on him was something like "Sharp
from PV is really strong and tough on the mat!"
Cody concluded his 6 year PV wrestling career with
a 3rd place finish in the 145 pound weight class (one
of the toughest overall weight classes this year in
Division II Section One wrestling) and earned both All
section and All league honors. He also made his way
into the record books and now sits a close second only
to Alex Pastena on the all time wins list with 114 career
wins. An incredible milestone and achievement for any
high school wrestler!!
Legendary wrestling coach Dan Gable once said "once
you wrestler everything else in life is easy!" Cody
will be missed, no doubt about that, but he's ready
to "move on" and I'm confident that he'll
apply all that he's learned via wrestling to all the
he encounters beyond PV High.
