ADD and ADHD (attention deficit
disorder and attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity)
have become "buzz words". Everyone talks
about it and has strong opinions - it is overdiagnozed,
it doesn't really exist, it is just enthusiastic
behavior, etc. Actually, ADD/ADHD are forms of
executive dysfunction and studies are beginning
to demonstrate the link between the level of glucose
used by areas of the brain that inhibit impulses
and control attention. Glucose is the source of
energy for the brain. Other studies point to a
link between attention and the release of neurotransmitters
in the brain. ADD/ADHD is diagnosed by observational
scales, and tasks requiring attention to detail.
Medication can be an effective tool, but the purpose
of this article is to discuss the non-medication
possibilities.
When necessary, ask the teacher to repeat the
information, break large assignments into smaller,
more manageable tasks. Work in a quiet area and
remove distractors Reward yourself upon completion
of a task write things down in your notebook or
on the computer each day, make a list of what you
need to do and prioritize Use post-it's to help
remind yourself of things - put them on your room
mirror, in your locker, etc. Try to get into a
routine, exercise, eat a balanced diet and get
enough sleep!!
