Bullying is just another name
for harrassment. Both girls and boys can be bullies.
Bullying can be physical, but often it is verbal
in the form of threats, intimidation, teasing
or talking about someone else. One out of every
7 children report a bullying incident! Most children
can handle it by themselves when it is mild, but
all children need help when it is severe. Victims
often feel insecure - maybe I really am fat or
stupid.... Often, they do not speak up and let
anyone know. We need to remind children that it
is not their fault and the bully is doing something
very wrong and disrespectful.
You Can Overcome Bullying
Tell someone - a friend, a parent, a teacher.
Walk away Try not to be alone in the places the
bully finds you Write it down and then report
the incident to an adult. A student can tell his
parents first and ask them to call the school.
Sometimes, a child will ask a parent not to call
the school because they are afraid of retaliation.
It is our job to make the school a safe and respectful
environment. Bullies need to learn other behaviors.
There are lots of things the school can do, but
we can't take action unless we know what is happening.
